5 things you need to know about my discovery call

You may have heard the term 'discovery call' thrown around a lot if you're in the market for a web designer, or any online service provider really!

Sometimes it's shortened to 'disco call' (way more fun 🕺) but there often isn't a lot of clarity on exactly what the hell a discovery call is and why you would want one...

That's because, beyond being an official first point of contact between you and your service provider, it doesn't really mean anything unless the person offering it explains what is involved in their discovery call.

With that in mind, let me tell you all about mine (disco ball optional):

1. It's a free, informal chat

It's not a formal meeting, forget about being in your Sunday best or having to 'perform' being a professional in any way for me - we're just gonna chit chat!

Who we are, what we do, why we do it, what you need help with and whether I can help you with it. It's that simple!

There is no money exchanged for a discovery call, it's totally free, but I do ask you to respect my time by showing up on time (and letting me know if you need to cancel/reschedule).

2. There is no obligation to book

We will have a conversation about your business, why you want to work on your website (or why you need a new one) and which of my services would be a good fit for you, but there is no obligation to book that service or work with me at all.

I love what I do and I love the people I work with - I want you to be dead certain that I'm the designer for you if we go ahead! If that's not the case, thanks for letting me know. If you have questions or hesitations, let's chat and hopefully, we can figure them out together.

It's also worth noting that I have no obligation to work with you - if I don't think I'm the right designer for you, I'll let you know.

3. I won't 'upsell' you

I'm not interested in convincing you to commit to my most expensive package or making additions to your service just to fill up my bank account.

What I am interested in is letting you know which services I would recommend and why, depending on your budget and design needs. This is exactly why I have a flat fee for many of my services or hourly work so that pricing is transparent and agreed to in advance.

I'll give you my professional advice and then leave the decision up to you.

4. I love questions, so bring 'em!

Questions, questions, questions - give me them all! It's great to do your research on my style and services ahead of time, as well as what your needs or expectations are for your website, but there's no need to prepare a full presentation.

We'll go over your needs in the call, what features you're interested in and any inspo you have. I'll most likely have a bunch of questions for you, so be aware of that!

And remember, there is no such thing as a silly question - if you're worried or curious about it, it's worth asking, so please ask me.

5. Honesty is the policy

I like to be upfront and clear with all of my clients about what they can expect from me and what they can't - no grey areas here - and I encourage you to be open about your time, budget, capacity and capability when it comes to us working together.

Sometimes these things don't match up and that's okay! It's better we know that right off the bat, don't you think? Luckily, I have excellent systems in place to guide us both through the process of your service, which I'll happily tell you all about!

Well, there you have it... now you know exactly what to expect from (and even how to prepare for) a Shiny Happy disco call! Bring yourself, your questions and your best disco dance move 💃
